Onetime member of the politically conscious rap group Brand Nubian, Sadat X, a.k.a. Derrick Murphy, spent the time between his debut release, 1996's WILD COWBOYS, and EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION pursuing parallel careers as an elementary school teacher, basketball coach, and rap MC. EXPERIENCE shows that, though Sadat X may have mellowed, black pride is still uppermost in his mind--in his preoccupations with social issues like black-on-black violence ("Why Don't You") and the black community's efforts at self-determination ("Help Yourself"), he has more in common with late-1960s collective the Last Poets than Jay-Z.
