Prince Markie Dee & The Soul Convention - Free (1992)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Hip-Hop
Style: Pop Rap
Label Number: CK 48686

© 1992 Columbia
Onetime Fat Boys member Prince Markie Dee and the Soul Convention tried to mix vintage soul with hip-hop production, novelty raps, and some quasi-romantic material. The results were an uneven and unsuccessful effort that didn't remind anyone of either the Fat Boys or anything that was very interesting.

Dice Raw - Reclaiming The Dead (2000)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Hip-Hop
Label Number: 088 112 344-2

© 2000 MCA/Motive Records
With his debut, Reclaiming the Dead, the Roots' unofficial member, Dice Raw, makes it clear that his mission centers predominantly on reinstating the old-school aesthetics Y2K hip-hop fans have become so disenfranchised from; Dice reiterates this predication by enlisting forgotten Philly pioneer EST from Three Times Dope to drop a few choice words on his "Intro." Yet, EST is not preaching to the choir. Reason being, Dice is neither assertive nor convincing in the pursuit of this ideology, as Reclaiming the Dead is swayed by a myriad of outdated concepts and contradictory sentiments. Though Dice flashes the lyrical prowess he exhibited on early Roots bangers with "Lava" and the spacy "Kamal Beat," where he boasts, "If Jesus could rap/He couldn't f*ck with me." Even Dice's repertoire of braggadocios cannot make amends for a host of blatant crossover attempts, such as "Raw Sex" and "If I Only Had Words," which interpolates Cleveland's "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" for the zillionth time. If Reclaiming the Dead proves anything, it proves that Dice is most comfortable in his original surroundings. Malik B and Black Thought's inclusion on "Lockdown" and "Thin Line (Between Raw and Jiggy) provides the necessary checks and balance that force Dice to spit at a higher level of efficiency.

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Hip-Hop
Label Number: RCA 07863 68109-2

By pairing a couple of all-time Wu-Tang Clan tracks with classics from a host of other great rappers, Loud Records: The Early Daze becomes an excellent look at the state of East Coast hardcore through the '90s. Sprinkled among the big-timers -- Wu-Tang's "Protect Ya Neck," "Method Man," and "C.R.E.A.M."; Mobb Deep's "Shook Ones, Pt. II"; Akinyele's "Put It in Your Mouth"; tha Alkaholiks' "Likwit" -- are great one-shots from Cella Dwellas ("Perfect Match") and Mad Kap ("Proof Is in the Puddin'").

Hole - My Body, The Hand Grenade (1997)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Post Grunge
Label Number: EFA 04995-2

© 1997 City Slang
As Hole were dragging their heels working on the follow-up to Live Through This, their British label, City Slang, released My Body, the Hand Grenade, a collection of outtakes, live cuts, and rare tracks. Most of this material dates from the days of Pretty on the Inside, when Courtney Love was tagged as a riot grrrl, since she screamed over sludgy, heavy guitars, but there are also cuts from their anticlimactic MTV Unplugged appearance in 1995. While the rarity value of this music certainly makes it interesting, the music itself is pretty average, with the dreck outweighing the good stuff (including a rewrite of the Nirvana rarity "Old Age," for which none of the members of Nirvana are credited) by a wide margin.

The Obsessed - The Obsessed (2000 Reissue)

*Reissued in 2000 by Tolotta
This pressing contains the original mix of the
the 1990 first CD pressing and 19 tracks total.
A photo of the disc is included in the RAR file.
Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Doom Metal
Style: Traditional Doom
Label Number: TOL 05

© 1990-2000 Tolotta Records
The Obsessed fire up more mid-tempo biker rock on this self-titled release -- fans of their doomy style will not be disappointed. With the exception of the dated-sounding "Freedom," the band is in top form. The sheer aggression of "Ground Out," the sludgepile "Red Disaster," and the phased-out blues of "Tombstone Highway" more than make up for any '80s-styled slights. A live set from 1984 is also included, wherein the Obsessed create a rumble only hinted at with their studio output. The group's relatively clean recording sound gives way to a live cacophony of noise and power, offering further testimony to their high placement amongst the stoner metal ranks.

Tuscadero - The Pink Album (1994) ☠

*A photo of the disc is included in the RAR file.
Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Indie Rock
Label Number: TEENBEAT 159 CD
☠: Selected by Lass
© 1994 Teenbeat
Tuscadero's appealing jumble of junk culture and punk-pop might occasionally come across as a bit too juvenile -- it's rather disarming to hear twenty-somethings so nostalgic for their childhood -- but the rush of sweet hooks and fuzzy guitars make The Pink Album a delight. Sure, the band's rough around the edges, especially since neither Melissa Farris or Margaret McCartney have particularly strong voices, but its amateurish edge is part of its appeal. The Pink Album was originally released in a rushed, lo-fi edition on TeenBeat in 1994. Two years later, the album was re-issued by Elektra in a remixed version, boasting several re-recorded tracks. While the cleaner, punchier sound may offend some indie purists, it actually makes the record more fun.

Gun - Swagger (1994)

Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Hard Rock
Label Number: 540 254-2

© 1994 A&M Records
Glasgow's Gun are known for their large cult following and the decidedly American-sounding brand of hard rock that came from their decidedly Scottish bodies. Most fans don't see Swagger as the group peak, as the band finds it hard to settle on any one style throughout its 40 minutes. Some tracks come across like artsy gruff Jane's Addiction, others like a hybrid of Cast and Def Leppard, others still like the bluesy metal ballads of Bon Jovi. Swagger got a big boost out of the chart success of the band's "Word Up!," a Cameo cover as pointless as it is catchy. It makes sense that Mark Kerr took over the drums on this album, as "Something Worthwhile" is reminiscent of the rockier moments of his brother's band, Simple Minds.

Emmylou Harris - Red Dirt Girl (2000)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Alternative Country
Label Number: 79616-2

© 2000 Nonesuch
On her 29th album, Emmylou Harris continues the evolution from innocent folkie to present day renaissance woman. Alternately sparse and lush, Red Dirt Girl can be seen as a companion piece to 1995's Wrecking Ball with the production credits going to Malcom Burn (who previously worked with Harris engineering and mixing Wrecking Ball). Here, drum loops and middle eastern melodies nestle in comfortably next to warm guitar work and Harris' gently wavering voice. Her extensive guest work on dozens and dozens of recent releases (showing up on albums by everyone from Guy Clark to Midnight Oil) pays off with great help from Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa, Buddy and Julie MillerGuy ClarkKate McGarrigle, and even alt-rock upstarts Dave Matthews and Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff. The diverse production only adds to Harris' earthy songwriting, adding interest to what could otherwise be lulls during the more subdued songs, and really showcases the understated lyrics that the singer has slowly become recognized for. The teary dirge "Bang the Drum Slowly" written for her father (who died in 1993) wrings with emotion and ethereal atmosphere, while "J'ai Fait Tout" (co-written with Cunniff) is an upbeat and jangly pop song, complete with hip-shakin' tambourine. While this is a big departure from her rootsy '70s releases like Blue Kentucky Girl and Roses in the Snow, it still burns with an honest intensity and clear voice that Harris is known for 20 years later.

The Shore - The Shore (2004)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Indie Pop
Label Number: 48451-2

© 2004 Maverick
The Shore's full-length Maverick debut offers enthusiasts of the AAA radio format a palette-pleasing aggregate of spacy Britpop and dusty American rock texture. It's a fashionable, well-appointed album, impeccably designed for the leisuring iPods of listeners who like their music furiously in the moment. Ben Ashley -- songwriting brains and frontman of the Shore -- channels Richard Ashcroft brazenly, particularly the cheekboned one's more dramatic solo work. But that won't matter to those swooning over the Shore's sun-spackled piano ballad "Take What's Mine," or the dusky, loopy, string-laden opener, "Hard Road" -- the sound might be shockingly derivative, but since three out of five Americans have either forgotten or never knew of the Verve and Ride, the Shore's lapping pace and gentle waves will wash forth as fresh and new as a watercolor daydream. "Waiting for Sun" plays soft pop verses off a chorus melody worthy of Embrace's grandeur (more keening strings, stat!), while "It Ain't Right" and "Firefly" do nice things with tensile electric guitar dynamics and changes into fluttery vocal harmonies. In its weaker moments ("Everything We Are"), The Shore drifts into middling alterna-pop. The Shore -- coming soon to a vintage-inspired Levis ad.
