The debut LP from the group Coven is noteworthy for reasons more historical than musical. That is not to say it is a bad record; it is more of an interesting record that is unique and listenable. With an elaborate package released on Mercury in 1969, a good trivia question can be made of the fact that bassist Oz Osborne performs on this album, whose opening track is "Black Sabbath." That the group Black Sabbath formed in 1969 when this album was issued seems to indicate that Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls may have had more than a little influence on the more popular heavy metal band. Also notable is the fact that the majority of the songwriting on this disc is by guitarist Jim Donlinger, who a year later in 1970 would move on to drummer Michael Tegza's reincarnation of H.P. Lovecraft, known simply as Lovecraft on its Reprise recording. The lyrics are all included in a second gatefold, in script of course, while the first gatefold is a photo of a "black mass." Jinx Dawson's vocals are distinctive, and tunes like "White Witch of Rose Hall" and "Wicked Woman" are almost on target. The band was for real, eventually hitting the Top 30 around Halloween in 1971 with "One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)" from the movie Billy Jack. With the "evil" prayers during "Coven in Charing Cross," Coven get a bit heavy-handed; the group goes over the top trying to push the black magic stuff. "Pact With the Devil" is written "Pack With the Devil" on the label, and the 13-plus minute "Satanic Mass" is more of a curiosity piece than musical adventure; it's no "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," and that's the flaw with this unique album. Had there been a song to hold onto or had "Satanic Mass" possessed the musical individuality of the Seeds' "Up in My Room," this disc would be more than just a novelty. "Choke, Thirst, Die," which ends side one, is actually one of the best performances on the record, though it also suffers from its excesses, with Jinx Dawson acting like a satanic Ruby Starr when she should have gone in the Wendy O. Williams direction. A decent enough attempt, but the group Black Sabbath emerged one year later doing it much, much better. Just compare the Oz Osborne/Coven opening track "Black Sabbath" to Ozzy Osbourne's song "Black Sabbath" by his group Black Sabbath to see the difference.

Five Deez - Kinkynasti (2003)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Hip-Hop
Label Number: !K7151 CD

Anime sensibilities and underground hip-hop attitude mingle with disco flourishes, funky breakbeats, and a bit of experimental dub's crackling reverb in Fat Jon's world. He's only one-fourth of the Five Deez crew, but his frenetic production on Kinkynasti can't help but overshadow the serviceable rapping. Recalling De La Soul, Kool Keith, and Prince Paul without sounding like any of them, Kinkynasti has too much going on for anyone but the most skilled rappers to overcome. To their credit, Five Deez keep it simple lyrically and concentrate on the party. "Funky" and "B Girl" could accompany a raging kegger on Venus, and "Sextraterrestrail" ends up as the highlight with its surreal robot and humanoid lover exchange. Down-tempo instrumentals, a reflective cover of Slick Rick's "Hey Young World," and the relaxed vibe of the vocals offer up some deeper moments and a relief from the album's overall zaniness. With a lackluster collaboration with German dubmeister Pole behind him, Kinkynasti adds a more satisfying addition to Fat Jon's curious universe.

Place of Skulls - Nailed (2006)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Doom Metal
Label Number: SUNN16

© 2002 Southern Lord
Not quite existing on the lunatic fringe like most of the Southern Lord catalog, Place of Skulls skulks somewhere between the desert rifferama of Kyuss and vaguely Southern, post-Black Sabbath drudge 'n' sludge. Its debut Nailed recalls the melodic doom of Trouble (especially with the vague, bleak Christian-themed lyrics) or scene buddies Goatsnake, the arrangements heavily armed with pig-iron guitar riffs and powerful, world-weary, clean vocals. Each song is solid and memorable, if not remarkable; opener "The Fall" emerges from a cave smeared with dank, minor-key melody and leaves a positive impression for plodding followers "Never Die," "Dead," and a depressive, impressive cover of The Animals' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Only "Feeling of Dread" kicks the tempo up to a full-blown headin'-down-the-highway Harley roar, bandanna flapping in the breeze, as ex-Pentagram singer/guitarist Victor Griffin's regular-guy garage moan spears through percussive, punky verse, chorus, and tricky changeup in the bridge. Look beyond Griffin's occasional lapse into Ozzy-style wails, and fans of the stoner genre will find plenty of cool, replenishing mud in which to wallow all the way through closing drill-press rocker "Song of Solomon." Nailed finds Place of Skulls smartly pacing itself through 40 minutes of impressive caveman-club bashing, the band deftly balancing songcraft and weighty muscle throughout. And with the lineup bolstered by ex-Obsessed/Spirit Caravan greaser-legend Wino following this album's release, the band might just be perched on the cusp of greatness.

Place of Skulls - With Vision (2003)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Doom Metal
Label Number: SUNN27

© 2003 Southern Lord
For a band that reached its creative peak in the early '70s, Black Sabbath has certainly had a long-lasting impact on heavy metal. Their riffs have influenced just about every stoner rock combo of the '90s and 2000s, and Sabbath is the band of choice for people in the doom metal field. Although Place of Skulls was formed in 2000, their approach owes a considerable debt to Sabbath's trailblazing work with Ozzy Osbourne -- there isn't a riff on With Vision, Skulls' second album, that isn't Sabbath-minded. Of course, the Sabbath influence that permeates this 2003 release isn't surprising when one considers what bands Skulls' members once belonged to. Guitarist/singer Victor Griffin (Skulls' founder) is an ex-member of Pentagram and Deathrow, while guitarist/singer Scott "Wino" Wienrich's credits include Spirit Caravan, the Obsessed, and Saint Vitus, in other words, Griffin and Wienrich both have a long history of belonging to Sabbath-influenced bands. And because Place of Skulls are as Sabbath-minded as they are, this CD will be classified as doom metal or stoner rock; however, it's important to note that Skulls isn't nearly as extreme as some of the bands that are considered doom metal. Compared to the noisy, brutally dissonant Grief (a great underground doom band that enjoyed a small cult following), With Vision is quite musical and melodic. This CD is heavy, but not in a ferocious, bruising, sledgehammer-to-the-cranium way; Place of Skulls caters to those who like their metal with a lot of melody. While With Vision is hardly the most original or groundbreaking metal disc of 2003, the material is generally well written and well executed; Place of Skulls definitely deserves some credit for craftsmanship. All things considered, With Vision is a decent and respectable, if derivative, outing for Griffin and his headbanging colleagues.

Place of Skulls - The Black Is Never Far (2006)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Doom Metal
Label Number: EOM 021

© 2006 Exile On Mainstream Records
For a while there, it didn't look like Place of Skulls would ever release a third album, having announced their breakup following an exciting but not surprisingly doomed-to-be-brief ("doom," get it?) association with journeyman Scott "Wino" Weinrich (Saint Vitus, the Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, etc.) on their stellar sophomore album, With Vision. Not one to play second fiddle to anyone, Wino was soon moving on to found new band the Hidden Hand, leaving Place of Skulls founder and former Pentagram guitarist Victor Griffin to initially pack it in before deciding to simply reassume the role of single frontman role for 2006's The Black Is Never Far. And, not surprisingly, the '80s-flavored doom and heavy metal emanating from these tracks proves as solid yet unremarkable as that of Place of Skulls' debut. It's true: Griffin's always distinctive guitar work alternates megalithic riffs with evocatively melancholy melodies on standouts "Sense of Divinity," "Apart from Me," and "Lookin' for a Reason"; but his indifferent talents as a vocalist (while former partner Wino's voice is technically lousy, but loaded with personality) inevitably consign the bulk of the remaining tracks to oblivion in an already crowded doom scene. As such, The Black Is Never Far isn't recommended for first-time Place of Skulls listeners, but may appease longtime Griffin and doom devotees with its occasional bright spots.

Melanie Doane - Adam's Rib (1998) ☠

*U.S. pressing.

Country: Canada
Language: English
Genre: Pop Rock
Label Number: CK 69780

Canadian singer/songwriter Melanie Doane poses in a white T-shirt and black leather pants, with an electric guitar slung over her shoulder, on the front and back covers of her debut CD, Adam's Rib, but she doesn't actually play that instrument on the album, sticking instead to her primary axe, the violin, along with occasional piano and mandolin. Nevertheless, the rock star posture she adopts better prepares the listener for the music inside than a photograph of her with her violin would. The music is midtempo, guitar-driven folk-rock, with the violin usually blended into the mix as if it were a rhythm guitar. The music supports literate lyrics in which Doane examines the state of modern womanhood, from the title track, which follows Eve's development over the album's hardest rocking production, to "Happy Homemaker," which describes the continuing tug of the career of housewife ("Never what we want / It's what we should") and the piano ballad "Good Gifts," a tribute to the singer's mother. Doane finds new and true things to say about relationships in "Absolutely Happy," about a woman's desire-and inability-to make her mate exactly that, and "How You Cried," a plea for emotional descriptiveness. She may be less ethereal (and consequently more direct) than her countrywoman Sarah McLachlan and less of a rocker (and thus more pop oriented) than Sheryl Crow, but she may rank with them eventually, and their fans certainly will find things to like on this album, which won her the 1998 Juno Award for Best New Artist.

The Hidden Hand - Divine Propaganda (2003) ⚓

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Doom Metal
Label Number: MCY-030

© 2003 MeteorCity
The voice -- though somewhat flat and strained-sounding -- is instantly recognizable. The guitar playing -- whether driving forceful, down-tuned power chords, or peeling off inventive and dazzling solos, is a virtual monument to American underground metal. Both are in possession of Scott Weinrich, otherwise known as the ubiquitous Wino -- the voice and guitar standing front and center of past indie metal legends like Saint Vitus and The Obsessed, and, more recently, the also quite awesome Spirit Caravan. When the last of these split in the summer of 2002, Wino busied himself with various projects of which The Hidden Hand became the first to bear musical fruit in the way of 2003's Divine Propaganda L.P. Another power trio, the group finds bassist/vocalist Bruce Falkinburg and drummer Dave Hennessy fulfilling their supporting roles to perfection, allowing their esteemed leader to, well, do his thing. Which is essentially what he has always done, only Divine Propaganda, as dictated by its title, focuses almost entirely on acerbic political commentary, as if Wino finally decided to acknowledge the issues doing the rounds everyday in his hometown of D.C. Thought-provoking exhortations include accusatory opener "Bellicose Rhetoric," the plea for environmental consciousness "Damyata," and the Sabbath-infused, covertly named "Tranquility Base." A welcome sample of Wino's equal opportunity admiration for punk rock, the absolutely storming, one-minute perfection of "Screw the Naysayers" says more with less than most pompous protest rockers' best shots, and delivers a heartfelt 'up yours!' to the establishment, all at the same time. And what of the mostly esoteric subject matter typical of previous band Spirit Caravan? Well, some of it makes the cut here, kinda, only now, Wino applies his imaginative wordplay to allude to the same social messages. Examples of this can be found in the pessimistic vision and psychedelic swirl of "The Last Tree," and the galaxy traveling, wordless chant of "Prayer for the Night" (see the booklet for bilingual poetry). All in all, despite covering so much familiar ground throughout, The Hidden Hand quickly affirms a fresh identity all its own, and promises to go down as yet another compelling chapter in Wino's ever-growing history.

The Hooters - Nervous Night (1985) ☠

Often overlooked, the Hooters' Nervous Night was a defining record not only for the band, but for 1985 itself. Filled to the brim with fun, danceable new wave-ish rock, the album is a wonderful representation of a lighthearted era. The peppy vocals of keyboardist Rob Hyman and guitarist Eric Bazilian give the band an assured, happy energy, while the sporadic use of the mandolin and melodica (a combination harmonica/keyboard) gives the group its distinctive sound. "And We Danced" and "Day by Day" became instant pop hits, but the remainder of Nervous Night is almost as strong. "All You Zombies," which refers to stories in the Bible, is the band's most powerful moment; along with "Where Do the Children Go," the track showed that the Hooters could be serious and dramatic as well as upbeat. Although the band wasn't able to maintain its momentum with subsequent records, Nervous Night remains a noteworthy contribution to mid-'80s rock and doesn't sound quite as dated as the work of some of the band's contemporaries.

This release shows the Hooters trying to modernize their sound from the over-romantic power pop of their previous efforts (e.g., "And We Danced"):  a little more dirt, a little less gloss, a little more personal expression.  The songwriting has gotten better in places here as well, still delivering infectious pop hooks with more sophisticated lyrics particularly on songs like "Brother, Don't You Walk Away," "You Never Know Who Your Friends Are," and "Deliver Me."  They do go over the top with the heavy metal ballads so popular in the late '80s; "Always a Place" and "Give the Music Back" reek of over-sentimentality. And "Mr. Big Baboon" has got to be one of the most stupid songs to come out of 1989.  The white reggae version of "500 Miles" featuring Peter, Paul, and Mary -- a very uncharacteristic Hooters tune -- alone makes the record worthwhile, however.  They still show off their non-traditional auxiliary instrumentation in places: mandolin, accordion, harmonium, this time with a little more class.

Kevon Edmonds' solo debut 24-7 proves that he can make it on his own, apart from After 7, even if it isn't a full-fledged knockout. Like his brother Babyface, Edmonds has an appealingly sophisticated spin on contemporary urban soul, never pushing the music too hard and keeping everything smooth and suave. This elegant approach carries him through stretches where the material isn't really distinguished, but fortunately, there aren't too many weak moments on the album. At times, the music can seem a little samey, but at its best -- the opening trilogy of "Never Love You," "Love Will Be Waiting," and "24/7," plus the Babyface duet "A Girl Like You" -- 24/7 showcases Edmonds as a sweetly ingratiating urban crooner.

Wendy & Lisa - Wendy & Lisa (1987)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Pop, Pop Rock
Label Number: CK 40862

© 1987 Columbia
Released in late 1987, Wendy and Lisa was the debut by Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman after they left Prince's much loved band, the Revolution. Although Sign o' the Times was justifiably heralded as a masterpiece, Melvoin and Coleman both possessed an energy and prowess that some felt was missing from that effort and those that followed. Luckily, a good part of those charms show up on this album. The deceptively simple "Honeymoon Express" has a propulsive energy mixed with effortless and recondite vocals, especially on the chorus. Given the pair's work with Prince, it's no surprise that the best songs here are conflicted and thought-provoking. Melvoin's off-centered and oddly sensual vocals never fail to impress, as does Coleman's keyboard shading and composing. The insinuating "Everything but You" is one of the more true-to-life and honest love songs you're likely to hear. The best track, "Stay," is suitably dark and oddly reassuring, and made this an instant classic. Everything's not great here. "Chance to Grow" and the instrumental "White" both meander. Produced by Coleman, Melvoin, and Revolution drummer Bobby Z, Wendy and Lisa lasted well beyond its release date and is one fulfilling effort.

Michael Bolton - The Hunger (1987)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Pop Rock
Label Number: CBS 460163 2

© 1987 CBS Records
Given a third chance to resurrect his third career, Bolton made drastic changes. He decided to stop trying to be Lou Gramm of Foreigner and decided that he really wanted to be -- Otis Redding? Well, that's what you'd think from his note-for-note copy of Redding's "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay," awhich brought him close to the Top Ten. Even more notable, though, was "That's What Love Is All About," an original ballad cowritten by Eric ("Love Has No Pride") Kaz that repositioned Bolton from heavy-metal hunk to tough guy with a tender heart. There had been prior hints that Bolton could sell a big ballad, but they were always buried album tracks. This time, the ballad was issued as a single in advance of the album, and it did the trick. For the rest, Bolton employed a new set of collaborators, including members of Journey and pop songwriting queen Diane Warren. The result was platinum sales and a firm place in the middle of the road.

Michael Bolton is no fool, and when he broke through to platinum sales with The Hunger, nobody had to tell him to record a follow-up devoted to more of the same. Bolton produced most of the record himself, and he teamed with the cream of the era's romantic rock ballad writers, people like Diane Warren (who gets five co-credits here) and Desmond Child, while the R&B copy this time was Ray Charles' version of "Georgia on My Mind." He also reclaimed "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" from Laura Branigan. The result was five Top 40 hits and millions of albums sold. Maybe Bolton wasn't the king of the hockey rinks, but his voice was now stoking the romantic fires in bedrooms across America, which is nice work if you can get it.

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Indie Pop
Label Number: 14253-2

Realistic isn't a great album on its own, but it hints strongly at Ivy's potential. A good deal of the songwriting comes from Academy Award-nominated Adam Schlesinger (also of Fountains of Wayne), who has an incredible ability to crank out pop songs -- the writing on Realistic is occasionally marvelous, but bland. Overly slick production and a few lackadaisical songs keep the album from becoming very memorable. While French singer Dominique Durand's wispy, enchanting voice and several great pop songs ("Everyday," "Dying Star") make Realistic worthwhile, the band's later releases bring more life to Ivy's smooth and gentle style of pop.
