Kevin Reynolds' 187 is a film about an inner-city high school teacher (Samuel L. Jackson) who has to face terror from some of the school's juvenile delinquents in order to teach his students. Given the premise, it would seem likely that the accompanying soundtrack would concentrate solely on hard-edged hip-hop and gangsta rap, but 187: The Music bucks convention and is comprised of mesmerizing trip-hop, avant-rap, and hip-hop. Cuts by Massive AttackLambEverything But the GirlMiles Davis, and a Prodigy remix of Method Man create a foreboding atmosphere that is nevertheless darkly alluring. The album sustains that mood and, as a result, it's one of the best pop music soundtracks of 1997.
