The debut from this 22-year-old New Zealand native is reminiscent of the ethereal musical territory marked by artists like Tori Amos and Kate Bush. "Crinolines and Waltzing," for example, is a hushed piano piece that allows Darling's breathy voice to fill the space vacated by other instruments before descending into a noisy blur. Avoiding the anger of other '90s women rockers, Figure 8 instead explores love and passion with Darling's subdued melancholy.
