This is one of those "Original Motion Picture Soundtracks" that is in effect a various-artists sampler. The unifying principle is that the selections come mostly from British pop/rock bands that are either just starting out or are far more popular in Britain than in the U.S. (The movie is set in New England; maybe there's a subtle joke here.) Of the former, the most embarrassing is Slider, whose "Inside" wins the award for Nirvana soundalike of the month. Of the latter, the most notable are Cast, whose "Alright" was a U.K. hit, and Supergrass. The veterans are Squeeze, whose 1980 track "If I Didn't Love You" is the oldest selection; Paul Weller, former leader of the Jam and the Style Council, contributes a remix of "Wildwood"; Del Amitri, who have made some headway in the U.S., are represented by a track from their Twisted album, and the Stone Roses, by "Begging You," which comes from their sophomore set Second Coming. (The selections are all a little older than you'd expect, probably because the movie was shelved for a year before release.) But the track that sets the tone is the lead-off cover of the Zombies' "She's Not There" by the Cruel Sea. The other groups write their own songs, but the style is more reminiscent of Swinging London circa 1965-1966 than 1995-1996.
