"Instant" songs, motivated by personal emotional crisis (his then-wife, Jan, had split up with him while finances were at a low ebb). These were the first songs, as opposed to instrumentals, that Nelson had composed and performed in some time, and despite the astonishing speed with which each was written and performed (under two hours from conception to completion, instruments, vocals and all) there are some gems here. Alas, there are some flubs, too, and a few tedious moments. For all the flaws, there's quite a bit here that calls for further development -- which, alas, has not yet been forthcoming.
