Beat Noir Review by John Dougan

After being dropped by Virgin due to lack of interest in the American market, hipper-than-thou English indie label Stiff signed the 'Printz and released their oddest record. The songs didn't depart from O'Neill's usual concerns (angst, urban anomie); the rock/pop influences of the preceding records gave way to a funkier, near reggae, backbeat. More than any of their other recordings, Beat Noir is rhythmically dense, a little intimidating at first, but a joy once you get to know it.
