The artists on Cleopatra's Virgin Voices, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Madonna range from veteran new wave acts -- most on the darker, colder side of synth-pop -- to straight-out industrial groups. Like most tribute albums, Virgin Voices is erratic; when the tracks don't work here, it's usually due to uncommitted performances or generic, undistinctive dance-music backing. But there are some good moments -- surprisingly, two of the best come from industrial heavyweights KMFDM and Front Line Assembly, who reinvent "Material Girl" and "Justify My Love," respectively. Overall, there isn't quite enough of that imagination here for listeners who prefer the originals, but the album will appeal to fans of industrial and dark synth-pop.
