With Urge Overkill's leap to major label DGC, in 1993 their former label Touch and Go packaged Urge Overkill Story...Stay Tuned: 1988-1991, an eight-song promotional collection of back catalog tracks from releases including the brilliant Supersonic Storybook and Stull. As a kind of greatest-hits compilation, in hindsight the disc seems lacking -- keep in mind, the release of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, which would include and popularize Stull's cover of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon," was still a year away as of 1993; at the time, these elite eight were the consensus fan and critic favorites, and commercial notoriety aside, they still represent the absolute peaks of the band's pre-DGC efforts. (Call it backlash, but the omission of Stull's title cut seems far more grievous.) "The Kids Are Insane" in particular remains a near-perfect distillation of the UO's strengths and attitude, a larger-than-life, tongue-in-cheek ode to rock & roll revolution; "What's This Generation Coming To?" and "(Now That's) The Barclords," though less incendiary, are even more epic and glam, classic collisions of style and sound.
