One of the best hip-hop DJs to come out of Los Angeles in the 1980s, DJ Aladdin teamed up with rapper WC at the end of that decade and formed the short-lived but noteworthy Low Profile. The duo showed some potential on its first and only album, the decent if uneven We're in This Thing Together. Especially riveting are "How Ya Livin'" (a commentary on urban violence) and "That's Why They Do It," which explains why some youths resort to drug dealing in the inner city. "Pay Ya Dues" makes a meaningful statement about rappers who get ahead without paying dues, but is marred by a homophobic reference. Though most of songs fall under the heading of decent-but-not-outstanding, the CD offers plenty of proof of Aladdin's impressive technique on the turntables. We're in This Thing Together wasn't a big hit, and after Low Profile broke up, WC went on to form WC and the Maad Circle a few years later.
