Super Mario Bros. [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] Review by Adam Greenberg

Super Mario Brothers was a rather forgettable movie in 1993, and its soundtrack is similar in that respect. There are numerous amazing artists represented on the soundtrack, but the format or the theme of the album is just so ridiculously confusing that the listener can hardly keep a coherent mindset going through the album. There are gems of songs (and forgettable songs as well) on the album, but the genres covered are so diverse and in such disarray that it's difficult to like the whole album, no matter what perspective is taken. There are new wave contributions from the Divinyls and Extreme, sweet soft soul music from Charles and Eddie, and light rap from Mark Wahlberg (then Marky Mark). George Clinton makes an appearance on the album, plausibly due to the financial crisis he was in at the time, on "Walk the Dinosaur." Megadeth surfaces to do what they do best, which is bring forth heavy metal, on "Breakpoint." Joe Satriani does what he does best on "Speed of Light." Even Queen appears with "Tie Your Mother Down." Eventually, the album ends with Us3's remake of Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island," "Cantaloop." Most of the songs on the album are actually quite good, but framed as they are, the ear is entirely unready to move from one song to the next, and that's where the downfall of the album is.
