© 1993 The Way Out Sound/Negative Records
Eleven stabs of ecstatic lo-fi noise and avant-rock moves from this San Diego group who combined Swell Maps-style post punk experiments with Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica. Similar influences that resound in the work of peers Railroad Jerk and Pavement -- both good points of reference for the sound herein. On their third outing, the mid-'80s Sonic Youth guitar chaos is in full effect -- a more energetic adaptation of the avant-guitar theme with seemingly random chaotic juxtapositions in rhythm that calls to mind the agile rock of the Ruins. Incidentally, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore appeared on Trumans Water's Milktrain to Paydirt album, and Beck frequently covered their "Aroma of Gina Arnold." This fact should be endorsement enough for fans of avant-rock and post-punk. Group member Glen Galaxy went on to form Soul-Junk as a solo project, which continued as a sister band to Trumans Water. The original version of the LP is a handmade collector's edition, which may be a little difficult to track down to say the least. All the tracks from LP version are on the less scarce CD edition, plus two astounding bonus tracks: "Wayout No. 7" and the self-explanatory verdict "The 20-Minute Song."
