Attics to Eden Review by Andrew Leahey
Madina Lake's second album is produced by David Bendeth, the same man who helped turn Paramore's Riot! into one of the most popular emo-pop albums of 2007. While Paramore's album melded big, bright choruses with teenaged angst, the boys in Madina Lake prefer a darker blend of electronic flourishes and anxious, brittle rock. The combination effectively negates the charm Bendeth brought to Riot!, resulting in an album that's technically competent but stylistically tiresome. Previously, Madina Lake took cues from Coheed and Cambria's school of nerdy conceptual rock, fashioning a futuristic story line that fueled the lyrics of their debut album. Attics to Eden claims to continue that narrative, but these songs rarely mention the fantasy/sci-fi world dreamt up in From Them, Through Us, to You. Instead, they're all too grounded in the humdrum worlds of post-grunge and emo-inspired rock, and Attics to Eden suffers as a result.
