AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
After spending nearly five years apart, the Geto Boys reunited in 1996 and released The Resurrection. Since they were more notorious for their lyrical violence than their music -- only 1991's We Can't Be Stopped, with its stunning single "Mind Playing Tricks on Me," showed the band experimenting musically -- it comes as a surprise that The Resurrection is such a strong album. Although the band never deviates from its standard blood-guts-sex lyrical routine, they have a greater sense of humor throughout the album. More importantly, they perform with energy and their backing tracks are vigorous and funky. As a result, The Resurrection outstrips every other Geto Boys record in every sense -- it is the leanest, meanest, and funkiest thing they've ever recorded.
