AllMusic Review by John Bush
Though it leans perilously close to the realm of Puff Daddy's trawl through '80s pop for hooks, an N.W.A. tribute album makes sense in 1998, the ten-year anniversary of the bombshell Straight Outta Compton. The album's prominence loomed just as large in 1998 as in 1993, and it's no doubt that many of these rappers grew up listening to it. Most of the versions are properly reverential, often sampling the hardly dated originals and sounding only minimally different from them. Snoop Dogg & C-Murder's "Gangsta Gangsta" and Silkk the Shocker's "Express Yourself" are both updated in the trademark No Limit style, but no one sounds completely comfortable looking back. Ironically, the only track which attempts to push the sound is from N.W.A.'s own Dr. Dre and MC Ren on "Compton's N the House."
