Long before his tenure as the outrageous Dr. Octagon, Kool Keith was the main mic man for Ultramagnetic MC's, the short-lived, groundbreaking 1980s hip-hop outfit. In addition to being Keith's first artistic vehicle, Ultramagnetic MC's also challenged hip-hop's sonic template by being one of the first groups to mix heavy sampling with live instrumentation. Its offensive title (and title track) notwithstanding, 1998's SMACK MY BITCH UP--the group's second post-reunion album--is a fine cross-section of Ultramagnetic MC's potent hip-hop. While not even in the same ballpark as their classic debut CRITICAL BEATDOWN, SMACK MY BITCH UP is filled with Keith's brash rapping and dense, urban soundscapes that sounded revolutionary in the '80s and still pack a mean punch decades later. Initiates should begin with CRITICAL BEATDOWN, but hip-hop collectors and fans of the self-proclaimed Black Elvis will want to pick this up.
