Future Profits Review by Craig Robert Smith
On Future Profits, their debut and final release, Los Angeles-based rappers Benyad and Mazik deliver a confused but engaging effort that deals with an odd subject in the world of rap -- Jewish identity. Although Jews have made prominent contributions in hip-hop (see the Beastie Boys and MC Serch of 3rd Bass), it is rare to actually hear Jewish religious beliefs end up in lyrical form. Doing exactly that, Blood of Abraham create 14 songs which all include references to their religion. Beginning with the bouncy, reggae-flavored "This Great Land Devours," the duo take shots at so-called rednecks ("Southern Comfort"), bigots ("Stick to Your Own Kind") and past and future missionaries ("Stabbed by the Steeple"). The varied and unique music behind the raps from producer Brett "Epic" Mazur relies heavily on jazz samples, but hard rock and spoken-word snippets are also utilized. The album's fatal flaw is revealed when Blood of Abraham team up with labelmate and pioneering gangsta rapper Eazy-E for a song examining discrimination faced by African-Americans and Jews (they use much harsher terminology). While progressive throughout their only full-length release, Blood of Abraham are considered by most to be no more than a hip-hop identity crisis.
