Udo Dirkschneider has now been in his eponymous band U.D.O. nearly twice as long as he was in Accept, the band he helped make famous back in the '80s. In that time, U.D.O. has carved out a prominent spot on the metal landscape, proudly playing their straight-up brand of heavy metal with Dirkschnieder's distinctive gravelly yet melodic voice. It's a tried-and-true formula of crunchy guitars, bombastic drums and hooky choruses that U.D.O. executes flawlessly on Game Over, the band's seventeenth album. If you've heard one U.D.O. album, you've heard them all as they one of those groups, like Motörhead or AC/DC, that can release similar sounding albums every couple of years, yet we never really get tired of hearing them. Some are better than others and Game Over is somewhere in the middle with tons of anthems like "Holy Invaders", "Kids and Guns" and "Metal Damnation" that remind you why this band kicks ass when they come to your town. No molds are broken, but I did notice a couple of songs that hearken back to Dirkschneider's heyday with Accept. "Metal Never Dies" has the simmering verses and huge Accept-style chorus that made Restless and Wild and Balls to the Wall so entertaining while "Midnight Strangler" is in line with the more accessible but no less heavy style of Metal Heart. If you are a U.D.O. fan you can pick this one up without hesitation and if you just like traditional heavy metal done right, it will scratch that itch.
