In the early 1990s, a rap group stirred some controversy by calling itself Young Black Teenagers. The name wouldn't have made a difference if they really were Black, but in fact, the Teenagers were actually White. Some MCs were angry and resentful, while others realized that YBT was actually making a pro-Black statement. Among the quintet's supporters were Public Enemy, and in fact, this impressive CD (which had a cover modeled after Meet the Beatles) was produced by the team that had been producing PE and Ice Cube, the Bomb Squad. Anyone who dismissed YBT as a mere novelty didn't seriously listen to "Punks, Lies & Videotape," "Mack Daddy Don of the Underworld" or "Daddy Kalled Me Niga Cause I Liked to Rhyme," all of which prove that their rapping skills were quite strong. Like House of Pain and 3rd Bass, YBT was a white group that rejected pop-rap, and it is the hardcore approach that wins out on this rewarding and provocative disc.
