The title track of comedian Martin Lawrence's latest foray into big screen treatments was once an immortal soul tune; the Persuaders' original remains a searing, extraordinary slice-of-life narrative that tells you more about male/female tensions and disasters in three minutes than hours of daytime talkfests. But like most of this soundtrack, the cover doesn't do much beyond exploit the usual formulas; a little gangsta rap bravado here, some quiet storm innuendo there. H-Town tries mightily to recapture the pathos of the Persuaders, but instead end up sounding more astonished than indignant. Nothing else on Thin Line (in other words, all the originals) merits or can hold up to serious inspection; it's just a backdrop for the misadventures of Lawrence, Lynn Whitfield, Della Reese and others. Outside of the hit-laden Waiting to Exhale CD, no recent soundtrack, including this one, has done anything except compile cookie-cutter tunes and issue them on sampler style CD's.
