On their self-titled first release for Sub Pop, the band Truly, whose members read like a who's who of ex-patriot grunge stars: Hiro Yamamoto (ex-Soundgarden), Mark Pickerel (ex-Screaming Trees) and Robert Roth (ex-Storybook Krooks) turn out a strong effort. Bringing the psychedelia that their former bands hinted at to the forefront, Truly marries guitar experimentation with solid songwriting on tracks such as "The Color Is Magic" and "Heart and Lungs." Though the listener won't find the famous trademark Soundgarden or Screaming Trees sound on this four-song EP, it is to the band members credit that they have emerged from the shadows of their old bands, creating an original set of songs in the process.
