Part of the charm of being a cult figure is the freedom it allows, how it enables an artist to follow any far-flung fantasy to the far corners of the earth -- like creating a convoluted cross-platform concept album about Vikings, for instance. That’s the driving idea behind Out of Our Minds, Melissa Auf der Maur’s second album, which also encompasses a short film and comic and possibly a video game, too; at least it is confirmed that it has a Web presence designed to grow, shift, and morph with time. All this is well and good but doesn’t do much with how Out of Our Minds plays as an album in its initial spring 2010 incarnation -- although knowing that OOOM is a concept album surely increases appreciation for the record, for without this knowledge the album merely seems muddled instead of purposefully cryptic. Also, the murmurings of Vikings and Nordic myths do lend weight, albeit somewhat frivolous, to Auf der Maur’s music, which remains reliant on ‘90s alt-rock’s dream pop and trash rock hybrid, emphasizing metal slightly more than swirling, hazy trance. But where Auf der Maur seemed stuck in the past on her debut, she feels like she’s creating her own interior world out of what’s familiar, giving Out of Our Minds shape -- a shape that can be absurd at times, but it’s unapologetically so.
