AllMusic Review by Steve Kurutz
Combining much of the spirit of other Seattle bands, namely Alice in Chains, Diva is a surprisingly strong record musically. Surprisingly, because the group's metal roots have been exhausted countless times by less capable bands, to the point where the mere mention of the genre makes one shudder. However, on songs such as "Hands and Feet" and "I'm Sorry," the group does much to update the stale genre, creating riff-heavy tracks that are melodic as well. Though the lyrics are, for the most part, ridiculously poor, they are delivered with enough attitude that the listener will hardly notice unless he reads the album booklet.

T-Ride - T-Ride (1992) ☠

*U.K. pressing.
Contains 11 tracks total.
Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Hard Rock
Label Number: 570055-2

Joe Satriani rightfully proclaimed T-Ride as the future of metal, but their debut came during the holocaust of hair, creating nary a ripple as grunge flooded America. This self-titled sole release is a lost treasure, swinging with the dignified dexterity of Queen, the surround sweeps of Def Leppard, and the retail ranting of the Tubes. Bassist and lead yelper Arlie possesses both of Axel's amazing octaves, but this Cali trio's sound is wholly unique, and the LP is one of the sharpest metal works ever. "Luxury Cruiser" rolls right alongside "Red Barchetta" and "Highway Star" in the greatest "I'm in love with my car" song race. The album's obligatory ballad, "You and Your Friend," is another dazzler, beating "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" and "Women in Love" in the ménage à trois finals. Plus, "Back Door Romeo" probes "Nothin' to Lose" and "Knocking at Your Back Door" in the ways of trunk exploration. Finally, "Heroes and Villains" updates the Bon Jovi/Desperado outlaw anthem with a twist. T-Ride swerves through the metal canon, hot-wiring a fresh spin on every bit they belt out before riding off into the stylish summer sunset.

This collection of early-'80s metal bands has stayed in print for one reason only, Metallica. This is the first recorded appearance of the infamous foursome, and their immense mainstream success has managed to keep this from disappearing into obscurity. The bands that they share this compilation with are typical of metal bands of the time. Influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (which included bands like Iron MaidenJudas Priest, and Saxon) but played with the fury of punk rock, this is where thrash metal really started. One of the unfortunate traits that these bands learned from their English counterparts is the shrill, high-pitched singing style that was popular in metal at the time. Malice and Cirith Ungol come off as the most dated because of their banshee vocals (and pedestrian songwriting skills). Demon Flight manages to come off slightly better, if only because singer Rick Gerard has a charming Ozzy-meets-the Flaming Lips voice. Pandemonium and Bitch contribute some average headbanging anthems, but Black N Blue and Avatar come the closest to matching Metallica's excellent "Hit the Lights." Recorded when Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine was still playing lead guitar, "Hit the Lights" is the best song on the compilation, a raging anthem announcing thrash metal to the masses with thunderous fury. James Hetfield's famous growl had not quite developed (and Mustaine contributes some uncredited background whining), but despite the bizarre vocals it blows away the rest of the compilation. Metallica collectors will probably want this, but even fans of thrash metal may be curious to hear its beginnings despite some of the lulls on the rest of the album.

This disc serves up close to two-dozen performances from metal bands. The DVD contains a standard full-frame transfer. The English soundtrack is rendered in PCM Stereo. There are neither subtitles nor closed-captions on this release. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but that should not keep metalheads from enjoying this Image title (especially if they are fans of the other discs in the series).

As is typically the case in multiple-sequel situations, the second movie in the Hellraiser series, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, retained many of the elements of the first, including some members of the cast and the composer, Christopher Young, while the third, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, took a different tack with mostly new characters, a completely different setting, and a new composer, Randy Miller. The challenge in such extensions from the original is the contradictory one of being "the same but different," and Miller had to pick up from Young's gothic, symphonic score (excerpts of which were retained in the third film), while also taking into consideration the movement from England to what was supposed to be New York City (though the film was actually shot in Greensboro, NC), and also maintain a certain consistency with a set of hard rock tracks that served as source music in the film's frequently used nightclub set. (A separate soundtrack album with those tracks was also issued.) Within those restrictions, Miller, employing the Mosfilm State Orchestra and Choir, managed well, producing a score that contained more generic thriller music and fewer distinctive elements than Young's, but that did the job of supporting the appropriate plot points. Every soundtrack album is to a certain extent an after-the-fact reconstruction, not the score as heard in the movie theater, but that is particularly the case here. The movie runs 93 minutes, and there simply isn't 46 minutes of scoring in it, as there is on this disc. On the album, Miller gets to flesh out and complete such pieces as the six and a half minutes of "Emergency Room," but on film the actual music used is much shorter. The composer has fulfilled his assignment here, but it was a limited one.
