This is a historic release, the first official appearance of recordings by Hollywood Rose, the band that would later mutate into Guns N' Roses. These were cut in 1984, when the band was led by Axl Rose and guitarists Izzy Stradlin and Chris Weber, with Johnny Kreis on drums, and these are the recordings that initially got Hollywood Rose playing the L.A. club circuit; Tracii Guns, the guitarist who later split to form L.A. Guns, would come along later, along with bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler. Hearing this original five-song demo, it's easy to see why Vicky Hamilton, the group's first manager, took them under her wing -- they were harder, tougher, rawer, and meaner than any of the metal coming out of Los Angeles during 1984. Not that the music was fully formed: apart from "Anything Goes" and "Reckless Life," both of which appeared on GNR releases, the songwriting was embryonic, and the music, particularly the guitar playing, fell prey to a few '80s metallic conventions and lacked the recklessness that Slash brought to the band. Still, these are urgent, fiery, utterly committed performances that have dated very little since their recording; it's metal played with the hunger and vigor of punk, something that later made Guns N' Roses stars, but made them outcasts in 1984, and it's a thrill to hear this original demo at long last. And that's a thrill that can't be diluted even though the CD itself is padded out with two different remixes, one by latter-day Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and one by Cinderella drummer Fred Coury. Although it's hard not to smirk in admiration at Clarke bringing Tracii Guns in for posthumous guitar overdubs on two songs, these remixes are superfluous -- way too bright, punchy, and modern for music that sounded as raw and twitchy as an exposed nerve in its threadbare demo version. Even with this filler, The Roots of Guns N' Roses is essential listening for any fan of hard rock or heavy metal -- not only is it an important piece of history, it's as raw and reckless, as live like a suicide as anything the Gunners cut or will ever cut again.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground (1969)

Upon first release, the Velvet Underground's self-titled third album must have surprised their fans nearly as much as their first two albums shocked the few mainstream music fans who heard them. After testing the limits of how musically and thematically challenging rock could be on Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat, this 1969 release sounded spare, quiet, and contemplative, as if the previous albums documented some manic, speed-fueled party and this was the subdued morning after. (The album's relative calm has often been attributed to the departure of the band's most committed avant-gardist, John Cale, in the fall of 1968; the arrival of new bassist Doug Yule; and the theft of the band's amplifiers shortly before they began recording.) But Lou Reed's lyrical exploration of the demimonde is as keen here as on any album he ever made, while displaying a warmth and compassion he sometimes denied his characters. "Candy Says," "Pale Blue Eyes," and "I'm Set Free" may be more muted in approach than what the band had done in the past, but "What Goes On" and "Beginning to See the Light" made it clear the VU still loved rock & roll, and "The Murder Mystery" (which mixes and matches four separate poetic narratives) is as brave and uncompromising as anything on White Light/White Heat. This album sounds less like the Velvet Underground than any of their studio albums, but it's as personal, honest, and moving as anything Lou Reed ever committed to tape.

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Hard Rock
Label Number: LA 99282

Produced by Guns N' Roses' Gilby Clarke, Shrinking Violet is a harder-edged return to L.A. Guns' roots in sleazy, crunching glam-metal a la Kiss and Mötley Crüe. Ex-Love/Hate singer Jizzy Pearl adds some street grit, as does Clarke's restrained yet muscular production. Although a few tracks are too long and begin to meander after a while, the songwriting is actually quite consistent overall; the end result is a surprisingly focused and effective album by a band that appeared all but spent as a creative force.

Brooke Valentine - Chain Letter (2005)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: R&B
 Label Number: 7243 5 94229 2 3

© 2005 Virgin/Subliminal Entertainment
Brooke Valentine and the people behind her could not have been any smarter when it came to seeking attention with the first single. In early 2005, production and grunts from Lil Jon, a guest verse from OutKast's Big Boi, and subject matter unlike anything else on the radio -- in this case, female fisticuffs, a very crunk-friendly topic -- was priceless. It was a bold move, too; not many female artists are willing to show their tough side right off the bat, if ever. As effective and unique as "Girlfight" is, it proves to only be a gateway to an album with a good number of chart-bound singles, none of which are quite as rowdy. Producers Jermaine Dupri, Bink!, Heatmakerz, Soul Diggas, and mentor/collaborator Deja (remember H-Town?) are due some of the credit, but Valentine comes off like a veteran full of fire and confidence, knowing all the hits of the past several years and how to leave a memorable impression while remaining contemporary. She does have quite a few disparate moods running throughout the album, which can be jarring on a couple occasions. "Cover Girl," a somber song led by acoustic guitar and churchy organ swells, is one of the album's few stumbling blocks. One look at any of the photos boldly displayed in the sleeve should tell you that it -- an "if I were only pretty" moment in which Valentine wonders what she has to do to attract a man -- has no business here. "I Want You Dead" makes up for it though, a demented revenge fantasy in which she does funny and gruesome things to a wrongdoing ex-lover. A debut that fulfills and promises at the same time, Chain Letter contains 40 faultless minutes of club tracks and a few minutes of seductive balladry. That's not bad for someone who put it all to bed before hitting the age of 20.

L.A. Guns attempted a comeback in 1995 with Vicious Circle, the first album in three years from the Los Angeles metal band. Attempting to conform to the fashion of the '90s, the band turns in a hard record, complete with grunge influences. To put it mildly, the results are a mixed bag. The band clearly doesn't want to embrace the new breed of hard rock -- the riffs and production are forced, which makes the group sound older than they are. L.A. Guns has also failed to come up with any killer riffs or hooks, leaving Vicious Circle a tepid affair.

L.A. Guns' follow-up to their comeback effort Vicious Circle returns the band to the sound of their hair metal heyday. Of course, the music on American Hardcore is anything but hardcore -- it's standard pop-metal, complete with Kiss, Zeppelin, Aerosmith and Mötley Crüe overtones. L.A. Guns do sound tougher than they did on their last few major-label albums, but their hooks aren't quite as strong as they were on their late-'80s records, and songs like "Kevorkian" and "Black Sabbath" sound a bit forced. Nevertheless, the record is a return-to-form of sorts, since the group is more focused and energetic than they had been since the early '90s.

Comparing the soul music of the 1960s and 1970s to the urban contemporary of the 1990s, many Baby Boomers would tell you that R&B isn't what it used to be -- and, to be sure, 1990s R&B was full of faceless automatons who went for a cookie-cutter, assembly-line approach. But 1990s R&B wasn't a total waste, and sizable talents like Mary J. Blige, Lisa Stansfield, En Vogue and Lauryn Hill indicated that R&B wasn't something you could close the book on. One of the more promising R&B debuts of 1998 was this self-titled release by Nicole Renee, an interesting singer who often favors a nasal style of singing but can bring to mind Deniece Williams and Ron Isley when she hits the high notes. Renee did most of the producing, arranging and writing herself, although she had some help from Lamont Dozier and Arif Mardin here and there, and even though she uses some samples and drum machines, real instruments are prominent on impressive originals like the alluring "Strawberry," the sentimental "Seems Like Yesterday" and the Isley Brothers-influenced "Let Me Down." Most of Renee's songs are about romantic relationships, but addresses social issues on "Cocaine Lane" and "Ain't Nothin' Changed" (which reflects on the hopelessness and despair of a poor neighborhood). Striving for the organic instead of the mechanical, this album made it clear that Renee had a lot of potential.

Given the fact that most of Home Invasion was recorded during and after the "Cop Killer" media firestorm, it comes as no surprise that the album is an uneven, muddled affair, not the clean, focused attack of O.G. Original Gangster. Instead of producing an album that illustrates his confusion through the music (like Public Enemy's claustrophobic "Welcome to the Terrordome"), Ice-T made a confused album, unsure in its musical and lyrical direction. Home Invasion does have some flashes of brilliance (about a third of the album, particularly the tribute to the gang truce, "Gotta Lotta Love"), but it takes a little digging to find the best material.

Whitehead Bros. - Serious (1994)

Genre: R&B
Label Number: 314530346-2

Kenny and Johnny Whitehead are the multi-talented sons of John Whitehead (of Whitehead & McFadden). The Whitehead Boys' problem is that they're musical in-betweeners -- their style is too light for hardcore fans and too suggestive for Boyz II Men followers. Their attempts at gangsta rap are almost laughable; the songs are constructed well, but their recitations just aren't believable. Meanwhile, love songs like "Shaniqua," "Beautiful Black Princess," "Sex On the Beach," and others sound limp compared to the testosterone-laced efforts of artists like Dru Hill, H-Town, and Jodeci.

Chapter 4: Labor Pains is arguably Syleena Johnson's first attempt to grapple with the towering legacy of her father, Syl Johnson. While Syleena's previous albums featured smartly produced, forward-looking R&B, the retro flourishes of Chapter 4's "Shoo Fly," with its slow burning wah-wah guitar, and Syleena's incredible interpretation of her father's gut-wrenching signature hit "Is It Because I'm Black," mark a fascinating and rewarding change of direction for this talented singer.

The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico (1990 Reissue)

*Reissued in 1990 by Verve Records for the Japanese market.
This pressing contains 11 tracks total.
Mastered by Bob Ludwig.
Edited & Remixed under the supervision of
Tom Wilson by Gene Radice & David Greene
Country: U.S.A.
Genre: Art Rock, Experimental Rock
Label Number: POCP-1841

One would be hard-pressed to name a rock album whose influence has been as broad and pervasive as The Velvet Underground & Nico. While it reportedly took over a decade for the album's sales to crack six figures, glam, punk, new wave, goth, noise, and nearly every other left-of-center rock movement owes an audible debt to this set. While The Velvet Underground had as distinctive a sound as any band, what's most surprising about this album is its diversity. Here, the Velvets dipped their toes into dreamy pop ("Sunday Morning"), tough garage rock ("Waiting for the Man"), stripped-down R&B ("There She Goes Again"), and understated love songs ("I'll Be Your Mirror") when they weren't busy creating sounds without pop precedent. Lou Reed's lyrical exploration of drugs and kinky sex (then risky stuff in film and literature, let alone "teen music") always received the most press attention, but the music Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Maureen Tucker played was as radical as the words they accompanied. The bracing discord of "European Son," the troubling beauty of "All Tomorrow's Parties," and the expressive dynamics of "Heroin" all remain as compelling as the day they were recorded. While the significance of Nico's contributions have been debated over the years, she meshes with the band's outlook in that she hardly sounds like a typical rock vocalist, and if Andy Warhol's presence as producer was primarily a matter of signing the checks, his notoriety allowed The Velvet Underground to record their material without compromise, which would have been impossible under most other circumstances. Few rock albums are as important as The Velvet Underground & Nico, and fewer still have lost so little of their power to surprise and intrigue more 50 years after first hitting the racks.

Initially released in 1995, GEHENNA delivered an evil yet atmospheric record, Seen Through the Veils of Darkness (The Second Spell), taking lyrical influences from Lucifer, mythology, and magic. It’s been 21 years since the album was released, and now it arrives once more in the form of a reissue. Does it still have the same impact today as it did when initially released?

The album kicks off with Lord of Flies, presenting a pestilent distortion from the get-go, opening with ominous chanting before the main riff kicks in. Somewhat heavy IMMORTAL-esque influences can be heard throughout, which is never a bad thing. The vocals compliment the track well, offering a mix of higher and deeper-pitched growls to refrain from falling into the stereotypical black metal vocal trap. A beautifully orchestrated atmospheric section adds to the immersion of the track, and boosts the overall quality before kicking into a fast-paced riff and the black metal goodness we so cravingly demand.

As Lord of Flies eases off, Shairak Krinnummh enters. Shairak Krinnummh is another strong track on this record, as it really brings in the atmospheric elements the band offers, and pulls it off excellently. The atmosphere created in this track feels almost magical, in that you feel transported into another realm whilst listening to it. The brief exclusions of vocals from time to time allow that immersion to progress, however the vocals do nothing but compliment the track whenever they’re present.

Vinterriket, interestingly the only track on this record with Norwegian lyrics, has a much darker feel to it than the other tracks on the album. While keeping the alluring atmospheric elements, this track still manages to throw damning black metal riffs in your face, in the best way imaginable. Guest vocals from Garm (ULVER) are well received on the track, and are a nice touch.

While several of the tracks on this album aren’t too hard-hitting or overly memorable (but still good), A Myth… is the highlight of the album, and one of the best tracks GEHENNA have created. The 8-minute epic beautifully shows off GEHENNA’s pure talent and musical ability, creating a magical and captivatingly evil atmosphere that draws you in from the start. A Myth… brings forth a sense of wonder while keeping its darker black metal elements clear to see for all, and really pushes forward our current idea of what atmospheric black metal is and should be. The spoken word sections add another layer to the track, without reducing its quality, before throwing you back into the ferocity of GEHENNA’s more evil side. Be it directly or indirectly, you can hear elements and influences from this track in alter atmospheric metal bands (think of a faster-paced AGALLOCH in the opening note pattern). Seen Through the Veils of Darkness (The Second Spell) is a killer album for this track alone.

The album closes with Dark Poems Author, a very satisfying end to GEHENNA’s offering. As with other tracks on the record, it consists of a strong mix of black metal and softer atmospheric elements, however more tilted towards the evil side with the inclusion of a piano adding an incredibly malevolent tone to the track.

Seen Through the Veils of Darkness (The Second Spell) has its positives and negatives as an album. Its biggest strength is the atmosphere GEHENNA create in each track, mixed perfectly with enough brutality to make it an album worth buying. This is amplified thanks to its reissue, with all tracks on the album produced excellently to make every little detail as clear as possible. While it does drag in some places and some songs don’t have as much of an impact as others, it can’t be denied that GEHENNA have created a wonderful black metal album, that could be used easily as an introduction to the genre or a gateway from straight black metal to its atmospheric sibling. What must really be complimented on the re-issue of Seen Through the Veils of Darkness (The Second Spell) is how well balanced the atmospheric and black metal elements are, which is no easy task to pull off.

Rating: 8/10

Tashan - For The Sake of Love (1993)

Country: U.S.A.
Genre: R&B
Label Number: OK 52469

© 1993 Columbia/Chaos
Tashan reminds you of Luther Vandross but without Vandross' range, theatrics, or material; Tashan's the bargain basement variety. Listening to 13 straight tracks by the nouveau crooner gets boring, and a major part of the problem is the unimaginative, computerized/electronic backing. This mixture of mid-tempo romps and ballads tends to run together; the most interesting song is an off-the-script remake of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You"; other notables include the jubilant "Been a Long Time," "Still in Love," the best ballad, and "All I Ever Do."
