Delicious is probably not as wonderful as it was hailed to be by some critics, but it's not at all a disappointment. The band (fronted by Kerr, better known for her comedy work on The State and Viva Variety) works with fairly typical indie rock -- the guitars move from slanted to ringing to crunchy sounds, shooting for that not-quite-Sonic Youth region. One of Cake Like's biggest assets is their ability to reach this sound effectively while still sounding positively amateurish. Their other main asset is the odd, campy drama that takes the foreground on Delicious: most of the songs stick with strange, spoken word vocals on subjects like a girl with a bum leg (the appropriately titled "Bum Leg"). When the music works with the oddity of the lyrics -- like during the closing of "Billy Boy" -- Cake Like is truly fascinating. Bruiser Queen, the album that follows Delicious, is far more polished and well-constructed; the question is whether one would rather hear such an odd project with an amateurish background, or a professional one.
