On the other hand, “Chapter 13” has a heavy rock and metal feel to it as well, but comes across much heavier sounding (nothing like their previous death metal releases, though.), and is something that’s sure to hold the listener’s attention with their groove and hard hitting moments.
Then again, this was the time when grunge rock was still going strong and heavy metal was on the decline, especially the more extreme forms of metal, back in the mid to late nineties. So, Gorefest decided to try to go in more of a heavy rock music direction, but this did not workout for the band, and as a result, with turmoil within the band, they called it quits.
However, it is really nice to see how the band progressed from one extreme to the other.
The song composing variations within their songs range from the extreme end to the not so extreme end, and is pretty neat to hear. However, personally, I am a big fan of Gorefest’s earlier death metal roots, which truly captured the band’s truest essence. These two albums: “Soul Survivor” and “Chapter 13” are good, but nothing that’ll blow you out of the water. This two CD set has over 2 hours worth of music, so get ready to rock your head off.
Check it out at your own risk, you just might dig it and if not, you’re S.O.L., as the band is no longer together. [Metal Mind Productions] Sarjoo Devani
