LIGHT IT UP, which stars an odd assortment of celebrities from Usher to Dana Gilbert to Usher Raymond, tells the story of a collection of teens whose favorite teacher (brat packer Judd Nelson) has been axed for providing extra help for students. So, do these usually quiet and accepting children just lie down and let it happen? Do they write their superintendent? Congressman? Santa Claus? God? Of course not, this is an action film. This wily motley crew rises up against the system that wronged their beloved instructor and in a fit of fury they take the school hostage.
The same spirit driving that fictional group is apparent in the music on the film's soundtrack. Artists like DMX, Master P & AZ (dueting with Beanie Sigel) exhibit such pluck in their personal lives and contribute equally wicked tracks. Steady as always, southern fried collective Outkast delivers "High Schoolin'," which highlights an unusually fierce beat. The standout track on the album comes from Ja Rule with a wildly irregular gospel-drenched reggae-rap (and a whole buncha other styles) track, "How Many Wanna," perfectly capturing the feel of utterly unstable, ferocious anger.
