AllMusic Review by Jason Ankeny
The promotional vinyl version of the Sub Pop Employee of the Month compilation celebrates one Lutz R. Mastmeyer, in lieu of colleague Curtis W. Pitts, trims its CD counterpart's two Sebadoh tracks, and substitutes Les Thugs' "Flags" with the group's "Suspended Time." The set otherwise captures a label in transition, evolving past the landmark Mudhoney and Nirvana records that established Sub Pop as the official imprimatur of grunge to become a diversified, eclectic, and cosmopolitan imprint more thoroughly representative of underground music as a whole. That said, it took some time for Sub Pop to regain its footing after its superstar acts defected for major labels, and Lutz R. Mastmeyer documents those growing pains -- still, there is some compelling music here, spanning from dream pop (Velocity Girl's "Crazy Town") to ersatz rockabilly (the Reverend Horton Heat's "400 Bucks") to proto-emo (Pond's "Cinders").
