Girls have been in rock bands for years now and it's nothing new. But the Eyeliners, a trio from Albuquerque, NM, are not your average girl band. Rather, these three gals are on the gorgeous side and very aware of it. Every one of their albums and 7"s features a picture of them posing like rock & roll supermodels. They began as a just-out-of-the-garage garage band and after several years together have developed some chops. This, their first release on Ben Weasel's Panic Button Records, which is distributed by Lookout!, is an improvement on their past work, but is far from being anything to write home about. They've now adopted a pretty straightforward, Lookout Records!-style pop-punk sound, but with quite a bit more pop than punk. They nail the solos fine and have added more in the way of melody, but they've yet to put anything into the songwriting. Songs titled "It Could Have Been You" and "I Could Never Hate You" go no deeper than their titles. The best music in this genre, like, say, that of the Descendents or Screeching Weasel, goes well beneath the surface. Those bands write great love songs that click with lovelorn punks in the same way that jazz standards or country ballads move their respective audiences. The Eyeliners are writing the same sort of songs, but with no feeling. These gals needs to look deeper in their souls and come up with something a little more substantial than the decently executed, but lightweight material on Sealed With a Kiss.
