Spore's full-length debut is a fairly predictable bit of Boston's heavy rock scene, working big sledgehammer guitar riffs and shouty vocals about as well as the genre will allow. Thankfully, Spore are pretty good with this sound. While the album's most interesting moments are its turns into smoothed-over indie rock structures, the band's primary goal is to simply rock out, and they accomplish this fairly effectively. Spore are also blessed with a decent sense of humor; they never fall into the dramatic cliches which could make the CD laughably banal, and their loose, reckless approach to songwriting reminds the listener that they don't take themselves too seriously.
