I was a fan of Heathen's follow-up album "Victims Of Deception" back in the day, but I never heard their debut until just recently, when they put the album up for free download on their website. All I can say is that this is a fucking awesome Thrash album. I mean holy shit it slays "Victims" up one side and down the other.
The general opinion is that this is the lesser of Heathen's two albums, but I think people who say that are high on something. Instead of the sometimes irritating proggy approach of that album, you get full-speed, balls-out, high-octane THRASH. From riff one Heathen put the pedal all the way down and never quit. I mean you get song after song of catchy, chugging riffs, killer leadwork, and Dave Godfrey's aggressive but melodic vocals. I can see why this got the band attention, as this is better than anything $Metallica$ or Anthrax ever recorded, period. I don't know what to say about this except that it slays, and there is not a dull moment on the album except for the sucky Sweet cover "Set Me Free" – which got a lot of airplay when the album was released, and got them a lot of notice – but it still sucks ass compared to the pure metal slayage of the rest of the album.
This is a must-have. A relic of pure steel from the heyday of the Bay Area scene that is not to be missed, and now that you can get it free from the band's website you have no excuse at all. Get over there and get this sucker, you will not regret it for a minute.
