In 1998, Kylie Minogue was dropped by dance label DeConstruction, and some thought she had committed career suicide. Obviously the backlash of 1997's Impossible Princess taught the diminutive Aussie one important lesson. Sometimes you have to just go with what you know -- go back to basics. And that's just what Minogue has done with 2000's Light Years. Symbolically dropping her last name from the cover, she re-enters the territory that made her great. Granted, with the teen pop movement at its strongest, one could say she just has good timing, but this work is leaps and bounds better than her Stock-Aitken-Waterman work. Light Years is not just another Minogue dance-pop record, but a great collection of disco stylings and Europop kitsch. "Spinning Around" is a fun and string-laden declaration that she may have made a mistake back in 1997, and the Robbie Williams/Guy Chambers-penned "Your Disco Needs You" is probably one of the best dance songs of the '90s. Arguably one of the best disco records since the '70s, Light Years is Minogue comfortable with who she is and what she's good at.

Just a note to say that the HTOA - hidden track one audio - here is a track called "Password", and not just silence (its missing tags). Thanks for the music.
ReplyDeleteWell.. yes and no. This was done on purpose. The reason why it's not tagged is becasue this track on the CD is located in the pregap of track 1, meaning track 0 meaning that it does not appear when ripping because it is located before track 1. It's index is 00. It doesn't actually appear in the ripping software nor does it appear in the linear notes. In other words, when listening to the actual disc, you'd get that surprise track if you were to start it normally.
DeleteIt's a hidden track and Lass left it that way because that's how it would appear if you had the actual disc. She always does that for albums that have this feature.
One of her preset settings when ripping such songs are "Gaps Apprehended + HTOA" This allows the tracks with an index of 00 to be ripped since the ripping software treats the track information as gathered silence from all of the songs combined. That's normally what the HTOA file is, gathered silence but every now and then, you'd get something like this.
That's why you should always play the album from start to finish. ... You never know what you might find.
Exactly. This is how Kylie intended it to be. "Password" is a hidden bonus song and since it doesn't appear in the track listing, I didn't tag because it's supposed to a hidden bonus track. Things like index 00 I intentionally leave out. Even certain hidden tracks that play after the final track, as in the song ends, you get silence and then the hidden song begins while still being on the same track number I also leave out. I just place the track title without mentioning the hidden track. Albums are meant to be listened from start to finish either wise it's no fun.
DeleteThanks for the explanations, I understand and respect your perspective; and while we're here, thanks again for the music. :) Regarding the HTOA, I'm rather backwards, it seems, as I typically delete them if they are silent tracks; my comment here was a warning for people of the same inclination that they might lose something if they did.
ReplyDeleteAs for hidden tracks after silence after a track, I used to be of the same opinion, and I would leave the silence with track and the hidden track as one... but these days I find it very hard to listen to full albums and like to keep the hidden tracks more easily available (particularly when there are a few that are the best tracks on the albums).
