Kronos is possibly the most brutal thing to ever come out of France. The Hellenic Terror is the band's third album. For those of you unfamiliar with them, they sound similar to Suffocation or perhaps a little more to Decrepit Birth. Take the brutality of Suffocation with some more melodic solos thrown into the mix and you get a sound similar to Kronos. The end result is a great mix of brutal melody that is very catchy and stays with you.
This album is pretty straightforward in the brutal, guttural Death Metal vocal department. The vocals are slightly improved from their previous album, Colossal Titan Strife. The biggest difference is that if you try very hard you can understand a few of the words bellowed. It's a shame it's so hard to understand the lyrics since they actually are very interesting and all about Greek mythology. It's great to see bands using lyrical topics that are much more intelligent than your standard gore, but it would be nice to know what the lyrics are without reading them in the liner notes.
The Hellenic Terror contains a bit more melodic sections than Colossal Titan Strife, but still possesses almost as much brutality as that album. Kronos is one of the few Death Metal bands that manage to be melodic, brutal and still remain catchy as hell in their riffs and solos. This is definitely a must have for fans of Death Metal. Although I somewhat prefer Colossal Titan Strife's slightly faster and more brutal approach, The Hellenic Terror is possibly my favorite Death Metal album of 2007.
