Buccaneer: The future of Mediasurf

As the captain of this website, I have now decided to make my final decision in regards to the future of this website and the fate of the Hip-Section. I have received 1 vote from Sentinel in favor of removing it due to the amount of resources that are currently being wasted which in turn, affects the rest of the website. Sentinel has stated that as it is now, the problem will not go away unless the entire section is removed and everyday he is proven correct.. I have received 1 vote to stay out of any decision making from Lass. My final decision is that the entire website must change... and that means we will move away from free downloads and into "Premium downloads"

That's right. Hip-Hop will stay but there will be no more Adfly and all visitors will have to pay to download from this website. Why? There are many reasons and the Hip-Hop section is the main culprit. This change will not happen right away, it will take time. The world itself is still in a pandemic. We are still directly affected as is most of visitors. We're still going through this. Once we, as people, as in society, stabilize, then we will make the transition. But as of right now, we will continue as we are, with free downloads via Mega.nz and Adfly. When things begin to return to normal, I will announce the change. I am currently looking at Florenfile as a possible host. Not everyone will like this change. It pains me to know that after 6 years of being the free alternative, it must come to an end and the most absurd way as well. The community we've built, the visitors who have always followed our guidelines, the one's who were there from the beginning, those are the one's that I am the most sad for because I know that this will be the end for them. I know that we have lost them for good.  We never wanted to go premium. We've been serving our audience for 6 strong years as a free alternative and were damn proud of it, relying on the generosity of of our users and their donations via bitcoin which still occurs today!. That can no longer be a reality.

We've done all we can in regards to trying to get the Hip-Hop audience to cooperate. Nothing has worked and nothing will work. We simply cannot continue as we are with the amount of resources that are being used up. I'm sure some have read this before but now it's time everyone knew what is actually happening behind the scenes.

(1.) The bot and its resources.

Screenshots from the bot's archives detailing the many failures of the Hip-Hop section.

65% of all errors, mistakes, not following guidelines etc... are from the Hip-Hop section alone. once more, that's 65%

The bot works like this. When a user reports a dead link, the bot will read the comment and then check the link in question. The bot does this a total of 10 times to ensure the claim is both true and to eliminate the possibility of an error by the bot's own accord. If the claim is true, the bot will publish the comment and proceed to move on the the next comment. Thee problems begin like this. An example is when a user reports a link that is not offline. When this happens, the bot checks the claim, same as before, 10 times, records a screen capture demonstrating that the links are still online, submits it to imgur.com, gathers additional information for the user because they've made an error, , deletes the original comment and then publishes the report. After all of this, the bot finally moves on to the next comment. Now, multiply that same error by 20.

Now that's just one type of error.  More problems occur when the users who report dead links don't specify which of the 2 links are dead. As in, the publication contains a FLAC link and an AAC link.
all of these examples are actual comments left by users of the Hip-Hop section and they almost always occur in publications that contain 2 different links. Same as before, the bot will verify if the claims are true by checking the comment a total of 10 times with each passing time, checking to make sure the post has either 1 link or 2 different links. Now multiply this problem by 20 times. Now we have a serious problem because the staff for every 1 comment that a user leaves that properly specifies to the bot which link is down, there's 20 more that don't and there's another 20 that claim that links are offline when they are not. This in turn slows down the amount of content the staff can submit because the bot spends more time and resources with these comments than submitting the genuine comments that properly request updates.

This never stops and all of this, the majority of it comes from the hip-Hop section. The remaining 35% of all errors come from the rest website. That means that the rest of the genres combined, only make up 35% of these errors. For those that use the Dolphin browser and were reviving errors, this matter was kindly brought to us by a user and a screenshot was submitted to the FAQ's section. The information is there and has always been there. The majority of that audience simply doesn't care.

(2.) I've grown tired of Adfly and it's practices.

Up until recently, we've had severe problems with Adfly in regards to their inability to remove many Microsoft Technical Support scams on their service. We took it upon ourselves to report these to Adfly which in turn, have been removed (for the most part) However at this time, these adverts are no longer the problem. Now it the increase in pornographic content which Adfly claims is in direct violation of their terms of service.

No matter how many times we report these to Adfly, the same pornographic adverts still continue to appear on their adverts. It has gotten to the point that we've reported so many within the last year and the beginning of this year that all of our emails are now blocked from Adfly's report abuse email address. Every time we try to submit a report, complete with Screenshots! which is what they ask for! the message is blocked by them meaning that they are well aware of this problem and no matter how many times they claim to not allow these types of adverts, they would rather keep them than to do their job and remove them. This is beyond unacceptable and more time is being spent tracking and reporting these adverts than the actual practice of publishing content which is already hindered due to repeated disregard for our guidelines by the Hip-Hop section. I can no longer continue to have this website or my associates operate under these conditions.

(3.) The introduction of Vinyl rips.

Myself & Sentinel have many releases that were only ever released on Vinyl records and moving them into the Premium territory is the only way we can have those on Mediasurf since Adfly is now plagued with pornographic content. The introduction of our Vinyl rips was actually supposed to be the big surprise for 2020 but due to the conditions laid out above - that didn't happen. Once more, we are not talking about the Vinyl pressings of the albums that are already available on Mediasurf, we're talking about albums, E.Ps, singles etc.. that are only available on Vinyl from various generes, Hip-Hop included. Myself & Sentinel were able to buy turntables that can digitally rip the records into FLAC. These rips, just like many of our rips here on Mediasurf, will contain photographs of the records as well as AAC versions for those that want them. Once the change to premium occurs, we will begin publishing those rips.

. All of this will take time and it will not happen overnight. As things are now, this will definitely happen and I do not fault anyone who wishes to leave and never return but based on what I have laid out, it must happen.

    2. From a Metal's perspective, the 1984 TT Quick mini album on Megaforce Records. It's only available on Vinyl. That was supposed to go up this year. The first 2 Pentagram albums, "Pentagram" later released by Peaceville as "Relentless" and "Day of Reckoning" both of these have different mixes/drums. The version of "Pentagram" that was going to be published was the original 1985, Devil4 pressing on Pentagram Records. Buck has a copy. "Day of Reckoning" is the original Napalm release with the original drum mix by Stuart Rose. These were also supposed to go up this year. Others as well.

  2. Much respect to you Buck, Sentinel, Victor and most of all, Lass! We have benefited from your perfect rips despite being free. Perfect in the sense that the tags (genre, year, composer, artists, album artists etc.), album cover, audio quality and so on are properly arranged. You get free rips from other people or website but most of them with low quality album cover, upsampled rips, missing tags... Here, you get the best!

I will be here to support your decisions. Salamat, from the Philippines! πŸ€™

  3. Let me say goodbye in advance, but also thank you. I don't consider hip hop as music, but anyway, you're home and have decided to punish the most for the errors of the least. You have made me (re)discover so much pop / rock / metal bands. Thank you so much. And a special thank you to Lass, that is defending the female rock cause so well :) Take care and stay safe. Merci beaucoup et bonne continuation.

Continuing where he left off, this screenshot was taken moments ago by the Spam bot in, where else? The Hip-Hop section. Essentially everything that Buck had explained in the "1.) The bot and its resources" half this post can be found in the screenshot below. So if people are still wondering why he is moving past us, this screenshot is why and I will continue to post them as they keep happening.

A lot people want say sentinel is too mean i say its him doing his job. If you guys dont browse the rap section you have no idea how dumb it gets there. Hes always been good to those that follow the rules. Im passed we're not getting vinyls until you guys move to premium but could you give us some examples as to what you plan on posting vinyl wise?

    6. From my end, it will be mostly singles and other material not released on CD. I was planning on the Consequence "The Riot/ Queens Get The Money 12 inch" and The Lost Ummah Demos by A Tribe Called Quest. I was alos planning on publishing more regional Latin music from the 70's and early 80's that were never released on CD as well and only exist on Vinyl and Cassette. These might now pertain to you but we have a large following from Mexico and Latin America who look for this music. We have a few compilations on CD and the reception has been very positive, specifically because it's the original recordings/versions. It's a very specific audience that this pertains to.

    7. @trey: Sentinel is the enforcer. He's not supposed to be nice. You have to put yourself in his position, dealing with multiple cases of people who never learn or care as what our guidelines are. The guidelines are there because of the limitations that come with running a free site. We could have easily not published anything related to do this and then people would have complained - and rightfully so - that those guidelines should have been published if we knew about them. It's not like that here. We have provided more than enough information for everyone to have a good experience, if they read the guidelines.

To the people not specifying which links are dead, that's on them. If they get upset by the response of the bot for failing to specify which links is dead because they only wrote "link down" or "dead link" in a FLAC, AAC post, that's on them. I mean, sooner or later you have to separate Sentinel, the enforcer from the person and their level of common sense nit matter their country of origin.

    8. @Buck I agree 100 percent!
@ Sentinel if you post those LP's I'll be back! that's what i like about this website, you post hip-hop that other dont! those japanese rap albums are the proof!

"Seems like you guys need to take a chill pill. Or make changes to the processes associated with the bots to address the current issues. It is the system that sucks, not the users."

No, it the users such as yourself that "suck" By the way, here's a record of all of your previous comments that were not published and are not going to be published because they were flagged for spam. Why? they all violated our guidelines

      Screenshot: https://imgur.com/yS5mp3b

All you've done is spam request after request, as if this website accepts requests. Let's see. I, Anonymous, requested albums so that means I didn't see or read the disclaimer that's clearly visible on the sidebar of every corner of this website.

I commented as "Anonymous" so that's 2 times you didn't see the disclaimer.

Requested an MP3 320 rip of a Hip-Hop album so that's 3 times that I didn't see the disclaimer plus, I didn't read the FAQ's section that clearly states that MP3's are not available and will never be available on this website.

Hmmm? What else? Oh, requested an album that was already published. Ok, I'm dumb and didn't use the search bar plus I continued to request more albums so that's 3 times I didn't see the disclaimer.

I continued to make the Hip-Hop section look bad by continuing these practices. Good job there by the way. The Hip-hop community here will love you for that.

I requested a Vinyl rip so that 4 times I didn't see the disclaimer because I kept requesting while still thinking that this website accepts requests even though the disclaimer says otherwise.

All of my requests were done as Anonymous and I complained on this post as Anonymous while not following any of the guidelines that were the reason why this choice was made so that mutes my complaint.

The guidelines are there because of the limitations that come with running a free site. If you had actually stopped and read the disclaimer and the FAQ's section, you would have known that but you didn't. If you don't like it here, kindly leave and find another free site that will support your habits and requests. This website will not and it will not do it for anyone. It never will. Understand this - WE DON'T TAKE OR ACCEPT REQUESTS. WE NEVER DID. Good bye.

    3. If that were the case love, I would have never argued against the first Hip-Hop ban and it was for pretty much the same reasons that Buck laid out in the post. We don't have a vendetta against any Genre or users in general. We've provided many guidelines all over the website. It's for them not for us. If they choose not to read them then that's on them. I don't know how to make it easier for them. Everything we've done clearly hasn't registered with them. Victor and Buck posted on the front page so that they wouldn't be able to miss any information and that still hasn't worked. I personally have given up. It's time to move on.

  12. why cant you just remove the ability to comment and have a text file and a bot that constantly does your own link checking ? and just have a tick box or radio button or something to report if the link is down also seems like your bot has way too many processes.

Just a thought, remove adfly, don't go paid, and if you do please use a DECENT filehost. And don't!! PLEASE!! don't include vinyl rips, There are too many variables, they take up too much space, they are too difficult for people to rip so they mostly sound shit. people argue over the sound of them 'nuff said' waste of time and space.

I just found this website and i am pissed that it's turning paid. :(

    1. This has been brought up many times and no one can provide a better solution.

Removing the ability to comment. We did that already in the worst section that was guilty of it. That didn't work either. They spammed elsewhere.

Remove Adfly. And then what? Find a decent host. We've asked and no one has been able to provide a better one . We tried Mediafire. That didn't work. People reported errors that didn't exist. We tried Bayfiles. That didn't work either. People wanted Google Drive. The files didn't last 24 hours.

As far as the Vinyl rips are concerned. I don't how others are doing it but with our current turntables, the files are the same size as the normal FLAC files. We're using an Audio Tecnica digital turn table - not a normal one. It records from the sound card, not from the actual turn table providing the actual volume without the hiss. They sound fine. We're not saying they're superior. There's certain music we have that wasn't released on CD. That's the goal. We are not submitting Vinyl rips of albums that are already present except for 2 albums that have different mixes.

The bot was put in place because people have failed to tell us on numerous occasions the links that were dead. In other words, they just write "link down" or link dead" on a post with 2 links - being FLAC or AAC. There4's also time where people lie and say a link is dead and the bot is programmed to verify this. This mostly happens in the Hip-Hop section. Place the blame on them not us.

Having a separate box for comments doesn't work either. If the same mistakes are being made now with comments enable, the same mistake will happen elsewhere. This has been proven many times over. You'd only have to look at this very post to verify this.

We're not going premium tomorrow. It will, take time. There's a pandemic going on and people are out of work. It would be very disgusting if we were to make the change tomorrow knowing this. It's not going to happen until we can all return to our normal lives. Given what I've seen in my area with the amount of COVID-19 cases, I don't know when that will happen.

    2. With that being said. I don't know if I will be around for 2021. I've agreed to stay for the rest of the year but that's it. Lass has gone on record saying that she will not contribute to a Hip-Hop section if I were to leave. That means 1 of 2 things. The Hip-Hop section goes away and so does Lass. Or, I stay and we go premium. I've seen too much and I'm not in this anymore at 100% My mind is elsewhere at the moment because of what's going on but out of respect to my friends and this website, I'm still around helping them out as we've had the worst year so far in our 6 year existence.

  13. I just discovered this website yesterday and I really love the selection that you guys have. Instead of just getting all of the new stuff and remasters up the ass you guys have a wonderful variety of older music and first pressings as well. I don't know about all of the chaos above but I am sad that I just now found your site but it's great that you will be free for the remainder of the year. My genre of choice is the pop section and I really love the selection 80's new wave/synth pop all of which are mostly first pressings. I also really like the "staff picks" section. I haven't seen other sites do that and it's awesome for newbies like myself that don't know about other genres but are curious. Thank you for your work. I might stick around when you go premium.

    1. The Hip-Hop section aside, it's Adfly that's the biggest problem. There are too many pornographic adverts and they don't take them down when they are reported. Adfly claims they don't allow this content but this is not true since the majority of the adverts are all adult content and it's the same adverts. "Gumtree for Sex" and another advert hat has 3 naked women on it. It's always those adverts and they never get removed. We have numerous screenshots of these adverts as well as us reporting them but nothing ever happens. Adfly's support team is a complete waste. Buck has grown tired of this. Moving to premium will rid us of this cancer but we will lose so many users as well.

    1. You may not. Those days are over. The new bot is aggressive by design. It is meant to enforce the guidelines of this website since the vast majority of users did not heed our warnings or read other information visible on this site. The guidelines haven't changed. Only the enforcement.

The new bot new bot is only programed to send us confirmed dead link reports. Everything is not sent. People being banned, comments as anonymous etc... we no longer receive that information. All of that pertains to the guidelines. If you were unfortunate enough to cross paths with it, you must have done something wrong.

We won't change it. The amount of resources it consumes on a daily basis means that it must be turned off at some point and since it only sends us what we need to update, it's not going to change.

Anywhere you have rap they always make that moronic mistake. I've been on other websites and forums where rap was available and they've always done that. I was on a forum where they had 5 dowload links per genre and every single person on the rap side would always write link dead or please reup. That would always piss off the admins and for the same reasons you mentioned above. That's a rap problem. That audience is dumb and they cause problems where ever they go epecially anywhere that's free. You should have just deleted the rap section. We all would have been happier and had less problems.

Oh and FYI the admins of that forum did shut down the rap section because the people there kept making that mistake. You have 5 links and couldn't write which one of the 5 was dead? One admin wrote. The forum died the follwing year follwing the shut down of Megaupload but for that final year we were ok.

Megaupload? OK, gramps. Thanks for generalizing based on your shitty experiences. "Rap" is wigga terminology, at least get your ebonics on point before posting your substandard comments.

    1. Abd all you've done is proven him correct based on your childish response. "Ebonics" "Wigga" "Silverman_Goo" How old are you? And why are you so immature? A proper counter argument could have been made without such childish tactics. You've set a poor example for your community. Good day sir.

That's based on everyone's experience on this site as well considering that this post flat out states the continued failures of your cherished rap section. Gee. Yeah it was a long time ago and judging by this post and your dumb 9 year response which is typical, nothing about rap sections anywhere have changed. Thanks a lot for proving me correct. You are a problem everywhere you go. Case proven.

    3. This is not the place to argue like children. If counter arguments can't be made on both sides, don't comment at all. "Silverman_Goo" I know who you are as well as your thousand other names. Restrain yourself, please. Your right to comment should not be stripped away poor by decision making. Become the example not the problem.

    5. You did nothing wrong Silverman. The R&B and Hip Hop sections are my go to's here and yeah, guys like goo up there make ALL OF US look bad. I'm 37 years old - I don't have time for "ebonics" or the other crap you think applies to everyone that listens to the 2 genres sweetheart. Way to typecast. I was here since the beginning. The community was actually one of the nicer places to be around because they didn't come with "rap is wigga terminology" crap or whatever nonsense you're on about. Most of the community were adults my age and we don't write like children. If the premium change will make these guys go away then I'm all for it but please don't remove the 2 sections for the mistakes of others. The community would be better off without them anyway.
